Color selection for signage might seem like a trivial matter. But, it is pretty significant. A good color selection or a combination is attractive and eye-catching. It can help create a positive first impression. However, there is much more to it then selecting a favorite color and putting it up there.

Think about a red color board for a spa. Red is usually associated with anxiety. How can someone think about relaxation and anxiety at the same time? Or, think about using light shades on a highway. They just won’t be visible beyond a certain distance. Due to the common mistakes people usually make, we have combined a list of points to be kept in mind while choosing the right color for your signs.

    The Color Choice

Quite apparently, this is the most critical point to consider. It can make or break a signage. In some cases, the color choice can even change the message a sign conveys. Hence, it makes complete sense to give this point ample thought.

Firstly, the color used must neither be too light nor too dark. If it’s too light, people will have difficulty in spotting it. If it’s too dark, it might look too dull and shoo away potential customers. In both of these extreme cases, the sign will either lose its effectiveness or might become useless. Plus, the color must preferably match or be in sync with the tone of the brand. That will lead to a smoother customer experience.

Secondly, the psychology related to the color must be studied. Red, for example, is related to danger and anxiety. Hence, it is popular on construction sites. Blue, on the other hand, stands for tranquility and calmness. It may work well for a spa or a meditation place. Green is often thought to be close to the environment. Hence, it can be used for organic foods and the like.

    Color Combinations

Colors usually don’t occur singly. They happen to come up two or more at a time. Hence, it is essential to focus on color combinations. The first thing to be kept in mind here is that there must always be a contrast. We can have a light font on a dark background or vice versa. However, it makes very little sense to have bright colors on a light background.

We can also use color combinations in our favor. They give us an opportunity to convey something special. For example, white color on black or dark grey often gives a very high tech feel while vibrant colors used together can help communicate a casual atmosphere. Similarly, a white background behind any color always helps in reinforcing it.

    The Color of the Font

Regarding a font, we have one key objective: it must be noticed. One way to do that is to use a larger font size. Another way is to use a strong color combination on the lines of what is mentioned in the point above.

Also, fonts are usually the only place where we can use multiple colors. And there is often a powerful temptation to use more than one font color on the same signage. But, one must try to avoid this at all costs. A maximum of 2 color fonts should be used. Once you have more than that, you risk confusing the reader.

No matter what color we use, it must not overpower the message the sign wishes to convey. Otherwise, the entire point of having a sign is lost.
